Though their popularity may shift, some elements of fashion will never really change or completely go away. I am no expert, but I would wager that western wear is among those style constants. And that's not surprising, given that cowboy apparel is one of the only styles that is distinctly American. Look around you the next time you're in an airport, at a concert, or walking down a busy metropolitan street. What are some things you notice in terms of street fashion? Most of the trends you'll see originated elsewhere in the world, be that Paris, London, or someplace with a good deal of style influence. In effect, there simply aren't many styles you can pinpoint as being born on U.S. soil. Of course, there are certain pieces (take blue jeans for instance) but there are very few complete looks that are exclusively American.
Western wear is probably the most distinctly American look, and while it can be seen in a host of scenarios today, part of the richness of its history lies in the fact that it was born entirely of necessity. After all, when you're exploring, exploiting (for better or for worse) and settling a new nation and undertaking all the feats and perils that accompany such an endeavor, you have to have the right clothes, do you not? But certainly as time wore on and our nation grew in maturity, items like cowboy boots became less of a practicality and more of an aesthetic. And though the purpose of those items may have shifted, their value never did. In fact, it's quite possible that the cultural significance placed on western apparel is so great that it will never really go out of style. It will always be revered as part of an important American image.
With 2k10 right around the corner, you can probably bet that cowboy apparel is still in no danger of disappearing into the sands of time forever. The look, although adorned for many different reasons (mostly-fashion related) other than for work "on the range", is still vastly popular and appears to defy the whole "in one day, out the other" rule. It kind of makes you wonder if, since America is still (relatively speaking) in her infancy, if other styles will eventually emerge that are genuinely American without help from other countries. I'd say that's highly unlikely since we have become such a patchwork of cultures, and thus, a veritable melting pot of fashion sense.
