People today are thinking too much about the function of their clothing, unless they are buying something for a specific activity. Sure, having the proper gear for skiing is quite important, just as swimwear will certainly be different than what you garden in. The rest of the time, however, most of us dress because of how we'll look, not because of what we'll be doing. You don't need special clothing to go the grocery, run errands, pick the kids up from soccer, go to the library, visit your aunt, etc. You can do all of those things in a dress, a skirt, jeans, shorts, slacks, a business suit or a sweatsuit. Of course, fashion dictates differently.

The phrase "slave to fashion" might be most often used as a joke, but ultimately it is quite true. Standing in front of one's closet, wondering what to wear gets harder and harder the more one pays attention to fashion. Heck, if you go by most of the current trends, you'll need to throw out all of the clothing that you wore last year and invest in new. Which, if you have disposable income, extra time, and a desire to do so, is just fine. For the rest of us, however, that's not such a great option. That's where western apparel comes in. When it comes to timeless or classic pieces, there are a number of options, and cowboy boots and other western wear pieces often remain on that list.

The reason that western wear tends to stay on the list is that it is a style of clothing that has been worn, every year, for as long as it has actually existed. It hasn't just stuck around because it is inscrutably in fashion, either. Western apparel is functional. Functional in a way that the people working out west have been appreciating for years. Just think about cowboy boots- they were made from necessity to handle the abuse that a cowboy would put them through out west- from snakes to briars, long hours in the saddle and more. Today, you'll find that not only are cowboys still swearing by their boots, but you're likely to find variations on this successful theme all over the United States, including on the feet of runway models at high couture events.

One reason that western wear is so versatile is that it chooses its accents in a manner that do not affect the actual structure of the clothing. Need to make a shirt fancy? Why, just add decorative and impressively intricate stitching and you're good to go!
