As someone who has benefited greatly from couples counseling, I tend to strongly encourage other people to also experience couples counseling. Cary, NC, which is where I live, has some really wonderful practitioners, and I feel fairly certain that when it comes to marriage counseling, Cary, NC is not the only place where you're going to find quality counselors. This field is one that seems to attract a breed all of its own, people committed to helping others learn the skills necessary for healthy relationships. Of course, I might just have had really wonderful luck in finding counselors, I won't rule that out.

Marriage counselors, Cary, NC located or not, may work with a variety of different theoretical approaches. Some of the major schools of thought, including more recent approaches, include solution-focused brief therapy, psychodynamics, systems theory, family systems, and cognitive-behavioral. As most therapists work with several of these approaches, you will likely find that, in a good situation, the counselor allows the person's issue to determine which theoretical system is used, and not the other way around. Unless you happen to know that a particular system works for you, it is usually best to allow them to make that choice.

Another aspect that I found to be very helpful was my marriage counselor (Cary, NC residents, this is a recommendation) focused on the present moment, rather than the past. Although past events were certainly brought up, acknowledged, and discussed, they were not the main focus. Understanding history is important, but all change occurs in the here and now, which makes the present moment the more important one to focus on. "Yes, but what is happening now" was a statement that my partner and I heard a lot. We realized, over time, that as we healed and learned to communicate with one another more effectively, our past fights were not really ever about the subject over which we were fighting.

I know, as do my partner and our counselor, that the desire to make the relationship work was something that my partner and I had to do for ourselves. Having a counselor who was willing to play an active role in helping us learn the skills and tools to do so, as well as learn about one another, really did make all the difference in the world for us. I now fully believe that marriage counseling could help the majority of people who are having issues in their relationship, and even those who are not.
