Asheville, North Carolina is a remarkable place to visit and live. It is located in the southeastern region of the country, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the greater Appalachian Mountains, and it plays host to all four seasons in all of their awe-inspiring splendor. The winters are generally mild, and the summers temperate-- there are a great many things to do in and around the city itself from golf, fishing, and hiking to bearing witness to cultural arts of the highest caliber. One particular activity of note for Asheville and the surrounding area is dining, and this is because of the great number of fantastic and eclectic tastes that can be found here.

Although Asheville is located in North Carolina, not all the food to be had there is southeastern in derivation; indeed, the variety of eating establishments would boggle the mind if trying to plow through them all, not to mention the eater's stomach! For example, a locally famous hangout for great pizza and a stout ale, The Mellow Mushroom, enjoys the notoriety of being one of the only pizza places I've ever been to in the south that didn't have the normally ubiquitously available buffalo wings! The Mellow Mushroom handily makes up for it, though, by playing host to over 100 brews both local and regional that whet any connoisseur's appetite for delectable beer. This isn't even taking into account the hand-tossed, stone-hearth pizza and calzones that have made them such a staple in the Asheville area for both lunch and dinner.

This isn't to say Asheville can't produce killer grits, biscuits, and other southern delights-- much to the contrary! Eateries like Tupelo Honey, located right in the heart of downtown, are quick to serve up a scrumptious buttermilk biscuit, made that day and by hand, along with a generous dollop of apple butter (that too was made earlier that day in-house) and a saucer of grits, rich with butter and milk. Their hickory-smoked bacon and egg breakfast has made many an Asheville morning get off to just the right kind of start, and their made-in-house desserts have capped off many an eventful evening themselves.

Speaking of dessert, there is an amazing confectionery called Kilwin's located downtown as well-- candied apples, chocolates, caramels, popcorn, and nuts are their forte. Residents of Asheville have long peered into the windows on Wall Street, watching the confectioners work their magic creating double-dipped apples decorated intricately with assortments of sweets and savories to enhance the enjoyment of such a classic treat.

Should you find yourself hungry in Asheville, North Carolina, fear not. The amazing restaurants of the downtown and surrounding areas have what you are looking for, from the mundane to the exotic. Should you feel inclined to do so, you could grab a slice of pizza made with Appalachian spring water, a pulled-pork barbecue sandwich, or perhaps an order of pumpkin pancakes and a bowl of grits... no matter what tickles your fancy at a given time of day or night, Asheville restaurants have it all!
